Anisimova ends Gauff’s China Open title defence in emphatic fashion
Amanda Anisimova produced a near-perfect display to end Coco Gauff’s hopes of winning back-to-back China Open titles.
Anisimova won the semi-final 6-1 6-2 in just 58 minutes and will face either Jessica Pegula or Linda Noskova in the showpiece match in Beijing.
Gauff struggled from the start as Anisimova converted each of her first two break points to race to a 5-0 lead.
The Wimbledon and US Open runner-up missed out on the chance to bagel Gauff in the first, failing to capitalise on two opportunities to break in the sixth game, but saved two break points herself before serving out the set.
And it was a case of deja vu for Gauff in the second as Anisimova’s ruthless returns saw her take another 5-0 lead.
Gauff managed to break back once, but it just delayed the inevitable as Anisimova clinched victory with her first match point.
