Home favourite Leylah Fernandez upset fifth seed Mirra Andreeva to reach the round of 16 at the Canadian Open on Friday, defeating the Roland-Garros champion 6-1 6-4.

Fernandez needed one hour and 21 minutes to seal her first top-10 victory of the year, taking advantage of an error-strewn performance from her 19-year-old opponent.

Andreeva was unusually lacklustre from the off, having to save break point en route to holding in her first service game. 

After that, she lost nine games in a row as Fernandez took total control of the contest, the Canadian hitting accurately and giving up nothing on her own serve to go 6-1 5-1 up.

Fernandez's level dropped slightly as Andreeva mounted a belated comeback bid, winning three straight games to apply some pressure.

But Fernandez – the only Canadian left in the men's or women's draws – served out the contest and will now face Naomi Osaka or Elise Mertens for a place in the quarter-finals. 

Iva Jovic was another teenage seed on the wrong end of an upset, as she went down 6-3 6-4 to qualifier Alina Korneeva earlier in the day.

Jovic won a mere 40% of points on her own serve (22/55), with Korneeva producing an efficient display as she claimed her first-ever win over a top-50 player.

Fernandez flies the flag

Fernandez gave the Toronto supporters something to cheer on Friday following a difficult few days for Canadian tennis fans, who saw world number four Felix Auger-Aliassime withdraw injured from the men's draw earlier this week.

She is the third Canadian player this century to claim 10 or more victories over top-10 WTA players, after Eugenie Bouchard and Bianca Andreescu.

Fernandez will now make her 10th career round-of-16 appearance at a WTA-1000 event, and her second at the Canadian Open, having reached that stage in Montreal in 2023. 

Andreeva went into Friday's contest with 38 WTA-level wins this year, the second-most on the tour after Jessica Pegula (39), so Fernandez's victory was a major accomplishment.
