Alexander Zverev will face Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of the China Open after defeating Juncheng Shang in straight sets.

It was a routine victory for the top seed in Beijing as he needed just 56 minutes to secure a 6-0 6-3 win.

Zverev conceded just two points on serve in the first set while converting three of his four break point opportunities to bagel Shang.

The German won nine consecutive games before Shang finally got on the board, but it was too late as Zverev clinched victory with his first match point.

Daniil Medvedev also reached the last eight in China with a 6-4 6-3 win over Jans-Lennard Struff, while Andrey Rublev defeated Roman Safiullin 6-2 3-6 6-4.

Rublev will face Alex De Minaur in the quarter-finals after the Australian overcame Quentin Halys 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.

Elsewhere in the Japan Open, Carlos Alcaraz progressed into the last eight with a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 win over Matteo Arnaldi.

Alcaraz found himself 6-2 down in the opening set tie-break, but recovered to take the first and did not look back in the second.

Zverev in unstoppable form

Zverev, who has won two grand slam titles this year, dispatched Shang in ruthless fashion to reach the quarter-finals.

The world number two recorded nine aces, won 89% of his first-serve points and did not concede a single break-point opportunity.

However, he must do what has not been done before in the next round if he is to reach the semi-finals.

Djokovic has never lost at the China Open, holding a 31-0 record at the event, which he has won six times.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, is getting back to his best form again after his injury lay-off, with Denis Shapovalov next up for the Spaniard in Tokyo.
