Hailey Van Lith vowed that the Chicago Sky would make Courtney Vandersloot's injury count for something following the 79-52 defeat to the Indiana Fever.

It was a disappointing outing for the Sky on Saturday as they finished with just 11 assists on 18 made baskets and going 32.1 per cent from the field.

Their misery was compounded when experienced point guard Vandersloot suffered a lower body injury in the first quarter of the contest.

First-round draft pick Van Lith, who finished with seven points and two rebounds in a career-high 26 minutes, spoke about her team-mate's misfortune with reporters after the game.

She said: "It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of your teammates and someone who means so much to us as Sloot does to our team and this organisation.

"Whatever's in store for the future of this team, we'll make this moment mean something in the end."

Van Lith could be relied up on to play more minutes in Vandersloot's absence for the Sky, who slipped to 2-5 following the defeat.

Head coach Tyler Marsh said of Van Lith's performance: "I thought she was solid. Still got to watch the tape, there's obviously some areas of improvement that we can work on.

"I thought that she was put in a tough position. To have to not just steer the ship but she had to provide some extremely valuable minutes in a tough situation.

"I thought she handled it as well as she could."
