Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake put on a big partnership as T20 World Cup co-hosts Sri Lanka eased to a 105-run win over Oman.

Having seen off Ireland by 20 runs in their opening match, Sri Lanka got the job done in more comfortable fashion in Kandy on Thursday.

After the early losses of Pathum Nissanka (13) and Kamil Mishara (8), Kusal Mendis and Rathnayake set about steering Sri Lanka into a commanding position.

They had posted 94 as a pairing before Rathnayake, who plundered 60 from 28 balls, was bowled by Jiten Ramanandi (2-41) in the 14th over, but Dasun Shanaka then came in and smashed 50 off just 20 deliveries.

Shanaka, too, was dismissed by Ramanandi, with Kusal Mendis then run out on 61, with a late, seven-ball flurry from Kamindu Mendis (19) seeing Sri Lanka put up 225-5.

Oman never looked likely to chase that target down, and their chances were reduced further still by the loss of Jatinder Singh (1), Aamir Kaleem (6) and Hammad Mirza (9) in the powerplay.

Mohammad Nadeem's stoic, unbeaten 53 anchored their innings, but only one of his team-mates got into double figures – Wasim Ali (27) – as Oman reached the end of their 20 overs on 120-9.

Data Debrief: Sri Lanka swat aside minnows

This was the first T20I between Oman and Sri Lanka, who have now won 11 of their 12 matches in the short format against ICC Associate Member teams, only losing to Namibia in 2022.

Sri Lanka, who are top of Group B with two wins from two, have taken at least nine wickets in each of their last three T20I bowling innings, after not doing so in any of their 24 innings prior.

However, the stars of the show were Kusal Mendis, Rathnayake and Shanaka.

The partnership between Kusal Mendis and Rathnayake set a new record for a third-wicket stand for Sri Lanka at the T20 World Cup.
