Tom Banton's half-century got England back to winning ways at the T20 World Cup as England overcame a nervy start to the chase to earn a five-wicket victory over Scotland.

England's loss to West Indies last time out saw them cede control of Group C, but they managed to avoid a scare against Scotland, who are on the brink of a group-stage exit.

George Munsey (4) and Brandon McCullen (0) were both skittled out in the first over by Jofra Archer (2-24), but Michael Jones got Scotland off to a strong start with his 33 off 20 balls.

Captain Richie Berrington then gave his side a good platform to build on with his 49 before Adil Rashid (3-36) made up for an expensive start, trapping him lbw after Liam Dawson had stopped Tom Bruce on 24.

Scotland's lower order struggled to keep their momentum, though, adding just 37 after Berrington's dismissal, largely due to Oliver Davidson's unbeaten 20, as they finished on 152 all out.

And England's chase got off to a poor start as Phil Salt (2) was caught off the bowling of McCullen in the first over, with the Scot then catching Jos Buttler (3) at the end of the second.

However, Jacob Bethell (32) and Banton put on a third-wicket partnership of 66 runs to build some momentum, which was quickly smothered when the former's wicket was swiftly followed by Harry Brook's (4).

Banton, who finished with an unbeaten 63, got help from Sam Curran's 28 late on, but it was Will Jacks who got the decisive runs, hitting a four and a six to take England to 155-5 with 10 balls to spare.

Earlier on Saturday, Ireland boosted their slim hopes of making it out of Group B with a superb 96-run victory over Oman.

Data Debrief: Banton keeps England steady

It was another nervy affair for England against an associate nation, in what was their first-ever T20I against Scotland.

But Banton's knock, which included four boundaries and three maximums, ultimately weathered the storm for Brendon McCullum's side as he racked up his fourth T20I half-century.

And though he ended up on the losing side, there is a bit of history for Berrington; he has become Scotland's top scorer in T20Is (2,441), while he has broken the nation's record for the most sixes at the T20 World Cup, with his two in this match taking him to 20 overall.
