Australia have crashed out of the T20 World Cup, as Zimbabwe progressed to the Super 8s after their match against Ireland was abandoned.

A ball was not bowled in Pallekele on Tuesday, but having needed only a point to book their place in the next round, Zimbabwe's qualification from Group B was confirmed.

Zimbabwe stunned Australia to win by 23 runs on Friday.

The Aussies then fell to an eight-wicket loss to co-hosts Sri Lanka, leaving them on the brink of an early exit.

That exit has now been confirmed, as Ireland also missed out on the chance to cling on to their slender qualification hopes due to the weather.

Zimbabwe have reached the Super 8s for the first time in their history, two years on from failing to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup altogether.

They will take on India, West Indies and South Africa for a place in the semi-finals.
