Sai Sudharsan heaped praise on his batting partner Yashasvi Jaiswal after India dominated the opening day of the second Test against West Indies in Delhi.

India reached 318-2 by stumps after captain Shubman Gill finally won his first toss in seven attempts, opting to bat first.

On a sluggish Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, Jaiswal led the charge with a magnificent unbeaten 173, while Sudharsan impressed with a composed 87, steering India into a commanding position.

Jaiswal’s innings — his seventh Test century — reaffirmed his reputation as one of the brightest young batters in world cricket.

Sudharsan, batting at number three, looked good alongside Jaiswal before falling lbw to Jomel Warrican late in the day, having notched 87 runs.

The only other wicket to fall was that of KL Rahul, who was stumped for 38 after a sharp-turning delivery from Warrican.

"It was a good contribution and a very good partnership with Jaiswal. I was not thinking about getting runs, I was a bit more free and I expressed myself a bit better in this innings," said Sudharsan. 

"I was able to take a bit more time and let things happen instead of trying to make things happen. I am definitely grateful for whatever I've done today."

Jaiswal’s latest milestone put him in elite company. His seven Test hundreds as an opener before turning 24 have equalled Graeme Smith’s record, while only Sachin Tendulkar had scored more centuries for India by the same age.

This was also the fifth time in seven hundreds that Jaiswal has gone past 150 — a feat only Don Bradman bettered before turning 24.

Discussing his team-mate's impact, Sudharsan said: "It's fascinating and so thrilling to watch him from the other end.

"He plays a lot of exciting shots. He converts a lot of good balls into boundaries, so it's really good to watch.

"He's giving me more awareness of what kind of shots are there to be played. There's no competing there, but I am learning a lot more and becoming more aware of what shots to play if I want to convert good balls into runs."
