Sri Lanka fought their way back into the first Test against Bangladesh, but the visitors remained on top after day two.

Bangladesh finished the second day on 484-9 after the Sri Lankan bowlers found their rhythm with the ball after a rain delay.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (148) and Mushfiqur Rahim (163) continued where they left off on day one. Captain Shanto fell just short of the 150 mark as he was caught off the bowling of Asitha Fernando, ending a 264-run partnership with Mushfiqur.

New batter Litton Das (90) continued to push Bangladesh into a stronger position, forming a 149-run stand of his own with Mushfiqur before rain affected the play.

Following a two-hour delay, Sri Lanka took five wickets in the final 20.4 overs of the day, with Bangladesh scoring just 61 runs in that time.

Milan Rathnayake led the charge for the hosts, ending the day with figures of 3-38, after taking Jaker Ali (eight), Nayeem Hasan (11) and Taijul Islam (six) in quick succession.

Fernando and debutant Tharindu Rathnayake have also taken three wickets each in this first innings.

The morning and afternoon sessions on day three will be extended due to the weather interruptions on day two.

Data Debrief: Runs galore in Galle

Shanto, Mushfiqur and Litton combined for 401 of Bangladesh's 484 runs. It seemed like the away side could have reached 600 runs before the rain changed the swing of the game.

This is not the first time a team has gone after Sri Lanka in Galle this year.

Australia posted a score of 654 before declaring back in January. Usman Khawaja scored a mammoth 232, while Steve Smith and Josh Inglis also added centuries of their own.
