A hat-trick from Shamar Springer helped West Indies beat Afghanistan by 13 runs and end their T20I series on a high, despite losing 2-1.

West Indies set a target of 152 after being put into bat, with Brandon King leading from the top of the order with 47 from 35 balls.

Shimron Hetmyer (13) and Johnson Charles (17) failed to get going, but Matthew Forde’s 27 off 11 deliveries and Springer’s unbeaten 16 off nine gave the Windies a defendable total in the United Arab Emirates.

Afghanistan, however, got off to a strong start with the bat as Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 73 gave his side a strong platform to build on.

Springer (4-20) then came to the fore with the ball, first removing Gurbaz before dismissing Rashid Khan and Shahidullah Kamal for golden ducks in the penultimate over.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who took a hat-trick himself in the second T20I on Wednesday, was then run out in the last over as Afghanistan finished on 138-8 in the chase.

Data Debrief: Springer offers hope ahead of World Cup

After losing the first two matches of the series, West Indies’ confidence will be much higher heading into the World Cup next month, though they still have a T20I series with South Africa to come before then.

Springer was at the heart of things for the Windies, with Afghanistan being reduced from 94-1 to 138-8 in the space of six overs.

Springer is just the third West Indies bowler to take a hat-trick in the shortest format, after Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd.
