South Africa captain Temba Bavuma is going to enjoy the "good times" after his team's heavy defeat of India.

The Proteas claimed an emphatic 408-run victory on Wednesday, completing a 2-0 series sweep, marking South Africa's first series triumph on Indian soil since 2000.

Simon Harmer completed a six-wicket haul as India suffered their heaviest Test defeat by runs.

India's previous record defeat, in terms of runs, was a 342-run loss to Australia in Nagpur in 2004.

"It is definitely up there," Proteas skipper Bavuma said.

"Coming to India is always a tough prospect. What makes it sweeter is that we have been on the other side of the result in past tours.

"It is an incredible achievement for this group of players.

“The way that we have gone about winning games, we don’t have guys to get the big hundreds, but we have five or six guys who can contribute to get us to a formidable score.

“It is good times within the team, we will enjoy the moment and afterwards have a reflection and look for ways to get better."

Bavuma is still undefeated as South Africa's Test captain, and he believes the Proteas' preparation for this series is what has set them apart.

"Coming here, I would never have thought 2-0 would be the result of the series," he told reporters.

"What makes it sweeter is the fact that we've been on the other side of the result, so we know how dark it can be. It's an incredible achievement for the group of players.

"Again, we've gone on to paint ourselves in history and we are creating some memorable moments.

"I would have never confidently thought we'd walk away with a 2-0 series win and maybe that apprehension would have forced us to bring a higher level of intensity in our play.

"But also in our preparation, we made sure that no stone went unturned.

"I am a lot more assured of myself as a person, and as a captain, I'm more clear on what I want to do out there.

"We have a lot of leaders in the team and it is understanding how certain guys provide value within the team and allowing them to flourish."

A three-match ODI series between these heavyweight nations begins on Sunday.
