Siraj dismisses four as India take control on day one of West Indies Test
Mohammed Siraj took four wickets and Jasprit Bumrah added three as India skittled West Indies for just 162 to take control of the opening Test in Ahmedabad on day one.
In the first of two red-ball matches to open India's home season, the hosts ended the first day 41 runs behind and having only lost two wickets of their own, helped by KL Rahul's half-century.
Visiting captain Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bat, but India needed less than four overs to strike as Tagenarine Chanderpaul fell to Siraj for a duck on his return to Test cricket after almost two years away.
Three boundaries in four deliveries from Brandon King (13) and Alick Athanaze (12) got West Indies back on track around the end of the ninth over, but by the end of the 12th, Siraj had accounted for both players' wickets.
Shai Hope (26) and Justin Greaves (32) put on a stand of 39 before the former was bowled brilliantly by Kuldeep Yadav (2-25), with Chase (24) becoming Siraj's fourth victim soon afterwards.
It was then up to Bumrah to mop up the tail, finishing with figures of 3-42 as the Windies' final four wickets fell for a mere 18 runs.
India quickly set about eating into a 162-run deficit via an opening stand of 68 from Yashasvi Jaiswal (36) and Rahul, with the former being caught by Hope off Jayden Seales' 19th-over delivery.
Sai Sudharsen was trapped lbw by Chase for seven soon afterwards, but India navigated a further 13 overs without loss as Rahul got his 20th Test 50 and new captain Shubman Gill reached stumps unbeaten alongside him, on 18.

Data Debrief: Siraj compounds West Indies' woes
India were beaten 3-0 in their last home red-ball series, against New Zealand last year, and since that crushing reverse, they have seen three legends retire from the format in Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as well as appointing a new captain in Gill.
But some excellent bowling on Thursday has them on course for victory already, and a home win would see West Indies lose four Tests in a row, which would be their worst streak in the format since 2020.
Siraj was the star, taking four wickets in a single Test innings for the 13th time but only the second against West Indies, having also done so in an away match in 2023.
