India have confirmed Shubman Gill as their new Test captain.

Rohit Sharma retired from Test duty earlier in May – a move that was followed by former captain Virat Kohli also bowing out of the longest format.

And it has now been announced that top-order batter Gill will take over India's red-ball team.

His first matches in charge will come against England, with India's five-Test tour beginning next month.

Gill has scored 1,893 runs across 32 Tests, averaging 35.05, with his highest score of 128 coming against Australia.

The 25-year-old made his Test debut in 2020.

Rishabh Pant has been named as vice-captain, with India's squad for the tour of England not including bowler Mohammed Shami.

India Test squad: Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (vice captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Druv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
