Tommy Fleetwood would relish the opportunity to reprise his partnership with Rory McIlroy at the Ryder Cup this week after they combined to great effect two years ago.

Fleetwood and McIlroy paired up for two foursomes matches in Rome in 2023, beating Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay as well as Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

Those triumphs helped Europe overcome the United States by a 16½-11½ scoreline – the seventh consecutive home Ryder Cup victory for Europe.

The pair earned the nickname "Fleetwood Mac" during that successful weekend, and Fleetwood would love to team up with McIlroy again at Bethpage Black on Friday.

"Whoever gets to play with Rory, what a privilege. What an amazing thing to be able to do," the FedEx Cup champion told reporters on Wednesday.

"To stand next to him on the golf course and play alongside him. He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, player of our generation.

"The energy he has and that he brings to your team, to the Ryder Cup, is amazing. If I get a chance to play with him, I would love that opportunity."

Eight of the last nine Ryder Cups have been won by the home team – the only exception was in 2012, when Europe overturned a 10-6 deficit in Medinah, Illinois.

Europe were trounced 19-9 the last time the tournament was held in the United States in 2021, only to respond with an emphatic win of their own next time out.

Eight of the last 10 Ryder Cups have now been won by a margin of five or more points, after the previous eight editions from 1987 to 2002 were all decided by three points or fewer.

And Fleetwood expects a response from the USA, saying: "We took a hammering at Whistling Straits [in 2021] – there's no other way of putting it.

"I think all of us that were on that team didn't feel like we did ourselves justice in the way that we played and never really gave ourselves a chance.

"I think when you've lost one, you have a chip on your shoulder. You have that feeling of hurt.

"One of the most motivating things you can have is watching the other team celebrate when you've lost. The American team will have similar feelings."
