England batsman Joe Root has suggested he is open to the idea of playing at the 2027 Cricket World Cup, following a career-best knock during England's victory over the West Indies on Sunday.

Root hit an unbeaten 166 to help England over the line and win their ODI series with one match remaining.

In the aftermath, the 34-year-old did not rule out the possibility of playing for another two years.

"I'd like to think there's enough there to keep wanting to get better," he said during his player of the match presentation. "That's always the thing to me - as long as I've got the motivation to turn up to practice and get better every day.

"As long as you've that fire in your belly, you're adding to the group. As long as I keep scoring and contributing, I'll keep putting myself forward. We'll see where we are down the line."

In hitting his monster score, Root also became England's leading run-scorer in one-day internationals, surpassing the 6,957-run record set by Eoin Morgan.

He is also his country's highest run-scorer in Test cricket and was the driving force behind England's victory in Cardiff.

With ducks for Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett and Jos Buttler, Root scored at least 117 runs more than any other England player during the match.

The 2027 Cricket World Cup, meanwhile, will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia between October and November.

England failed to qualify for the semi-final of the 2024 Cricket World Cup, held in India, finishing seventh out of 10 in the table in the defence of their 2019 title.
