Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik saved two match points on their way to lifting the US Open mixed doubles title against Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.

Mensik sealed the victory with a powerful ace on the pair's third championship point, sealing a 6-3 1-6 10-6 win in 72 minutes.

It was the first grand slam title for both players, just weeks after Muchova was beaten by Linda Noskova in the Wimbledon final, but they had to do it the hard way after being blown away in the second set.

The victory came after the pair had saved two match points in the semi-final against Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev.

Muchova and Mensik won their semi-final 5-4 (8-6) 3-5 11-9, finding themselves 9-7 down in the tie-break, but reeled off the final four points to turn things around and book their place in the showpiece.

"We had really great matches to play," Mensik, who had never played mixed doubles before, said after lifting the trophy.

"It's good we tried a lot of things on the court. It gives you a little bit of boost of confidence."

And the other semi-final was also decided by a 10-point tie-break.

Bencic and Cobolli had to come from behind to defeat Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils, triumphing 4-5 (7-9) 4-1 10-5.

It ended Svitolina and Monfils' chance of becoming the first married couple to win a grand slam mixed doubles title since 1939 – the Frenchman is retiring at the end of the season, meaning they will not have another opportunity.
