Former world number one Daniil Medvedev advanced into the round of 16 with a comfortable 6-3 7-6 victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Medvedev, who was forced to retire against Learner Tien in the China Open last week due to injury, broke serve immediately and reeled off three consecutive games in the first set.

While the second would eventually go to a tiebreak, Medvedev sealed the straight-sets victory to secure his progression into the next round where he will, once again, face Tien.

Tien, ranked 36th, has already beaten Medvedev twice this year, including a five-set thriller at the Australian Open and a China Open semi-final win.

The American beat Cameron Norrie 7-6 6-3 to seal a spot in the round of 16, despite a tricky opening set.

Data Debrief: Medvedev continues impressive 2025

Among active players, Medvedev holds a 69.5% win rate on hard courts at ATP Masters 1000 events (89–39), ranking behind only Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz among those with at least 25 matches.

The former US Open champion has now won seven out of his last 11 matches when taking the first set on the ATP World Tour, and he will be looking to extend that run when he takes on Tien.

Medvedev has won 23 (43.1%) matches in straight sets on the ATP World Tour this year.
