Lorenzo Musetti suffered a shock early exit from the Monte-Carlo Masters after he was beaten by home hopeful Valentin Vacherot in straight sets on Wednesday.

Vacherot, who saved a set point before taking the opener, kept his composure to seal an impressive 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 victory in two hours and nine minutes.

Back-to-back breaks of serve opened proceedings on Court Rainier III before both players began trading blows to see who would be the first to blink.

It was Vacherot who took the tie-break, having roared back from 4-1 down, and the Monegasque started the second set strongly and missed two early break opportunities.

Vacherot finally broke to love to take control, and though Musetti broke back, he inched back ahead before sealing his progression with a blistering serve that whistled along the left baseline.

"The emotions went [up and] down a bit," Vacherot said after dumping the fourth seed out of the tournament.

"If someone told me that my first top-five win, second after Shanghai, would be here on a night session on the centre court I have been hitting on since I was six years old, it's nothing, nothing [better] can be done."

Elsewhere, Felix Auger-Aliassime was also put through his paces in order to reach the last 16, getting the better of Marin Cilic.

Auger-Aliassime earned a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory to tee up a clash with Casper Ruud for a place in the quarter-finals.

Data Debrief: Vacherot keeps Monegasque momentum going

Since the ATP rankings were first published in 1973, Vacherot has become the first Monegasque player to claim an ATP top-10 win at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

In fact, he became the first Monegasque since his coach and half-brother, Benjamin Balleret, to reach the third round in the Principality.
