Mboko brushes aside Ostapenko to reach Qatar showpiece
Victoria Mboko booked her spot in the Qatar Open final with a straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko.
The 19-year-old won 6-3 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes to qualify for her second WTA 1000 final.
Ostapenko made a fast start in Doha, breaking to love in the first game to put Mboko on the back foot, but the latter broke back soon after to level the opening set at 2-2.
Mboko then broke ahead in the eighth game, allowing her to serve for the early advantage, which she took with her second set point.
The teenager was then at her very best in the second, converting three of a possible four break points to take a 5-0 lead in the set.
Ostapenko managed to avoid a bagel before winning another game, but Mboko clinched her place in the final when her Latvian opponent sent a forehand long of the baseline.

Data Debrief: Top 10 berth pending for Mboko
Since the event's inauguration in 2001, Mboko is now the fourth teenager to reach the women's singles final at the Qatar Open, after Svetlana Kuznetsova (2004), Maria Sharapova (2005) and Ostapenko (2016).
She is also the third teenager to defeat grand slam champions in the quarter-final and semi-final at a WTA-1000 event, after Belinda Bencic (Toronto 2015) and Mirra Andreeva (Dubai 2025).
Mboko, who has won a WTA tour-high 13 matches in 2026, is now guaranteed to become the fourth Canadian player to enter the WTA 10.
Whether she will be ranked ninth or tenth will depend on the outcome in the final, where she will face either Maria Sakkari or Karolina Muchova.
