Alcaraz breezes past Ruud to reach Indian Wells quarters
Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells after overcoming 13th seed Casper Ruud in straight sets on Wednesday.
Alcaraz, who last won the tournament in 2024 with victory over Daniil Medvedev in the final, edged closer to another showpiece match in California with a 6-1 7-6 (7-2) triumph.
The world number one needed just 37 minutes to take the opening set, though the Spaniard was only able to convert three of the eight break opportunities he created for himself.
Ruud improved in the second, though, with the pair trading blows throughout but unable to make a breakthrough, with a tie-break deciding which way the match would go.
And it would go in favour of Alcaraz, who, at the second attempt, sealed his spot in the last eight, with former champion Cameron Norrie up next for the two-time champion.
It will be the first meeting between the pair since the Paris Masters last year, an encounter that saw Norrie come out on top in three sets for his third win over Alcaraz.

Data Debrief: The streak continues
After being put through his paces by Arthur Rinderknech in the previous round, Alcaraz enjoyed a more straightforward match here to keep his unbeaten streak rolling.
He has opened the 2026 season with 15 straight matches. He is only the third player, after Stefan Edberg in 1987 and Jannik Sinner two years ago to win their first 15 encounters of a season in the Open Era under the age of 23.
Alcaraz has also now reached the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the fifth straight year, becoming the first man under the age of 23 to do so.
