The Dallas Mavericks are set to hire the University of Michigan’s Dusty May as head coach after he guided the Wolverines to their second NCAA title and first in 37 years this past season.

May takes over after Dallas and head coach Jason Kidd mutually agreed to part ways following a 26-56 season.

The 49-year-old May got his first college head coaching job in 2018 at Florida Atlantic University, and the Owls made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 21 years in 2023.

Florida Atlantic was a No. 9 seed, but May led the school to its first Final Four before losing to fifth-seeded San Diego State University on a buzzer beater.

The Owls went back to the NCAA Tournament as an eight seed the following season, though they were eliminated in the first round.

Florida Atlantic went 60-13 over those two seasons, leading to Michigan hiring May away from the Owls after the Wolverines went 8-24 in 2023-24.

Michigan posted a 27-10 record in 2024-25 and advanced to the Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, and the Wolverines went 37-3 last season to secure their first national championship since 1989.

Starting with Florida Atlantic’s run to the Final Four in 2022-23, May compiled a 124-26 record and went 12-3 in NCAA Tournament games.

That .827 overall winning percentage was the third-best during that stretch behind the University of Houston’s Kelvin Sampson (130-21; .861) and Duke University’s Jon Scheyer (124-25; .832).

May will now try to turn the Mavericks around following their worst season since 2017-18.

May, though, inherits 2025-26 NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, and nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving is slated to return next season after sitting out the entire campaign while recovering from a torn ACL.

Dallas owns the No. 9, No. 30 and No. 48 picks in this week’s NBA Draft.
