The New York Liberty turned to the NBA to find their new coach.

The Liberty announced the hiring of Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco as the 10th coach in franchise history on Wednesday.

DeMarco, 40, joins the Liberty after spending 14 seasons with the Warriors. He began as a scout and was then promoted to the director of player development before serving as an assistant coach for 11 seasons, helping Golden State win four NBA titles.

"After a thorough search, we could not be more thrilled to welcome Chris DeMarco as our head coach," Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement. "Throughout the process, our goal was clear: identify a leader who could elevate our culture, implement elite-level systems, and bring a modern vision for how to guide this franchise forward on the court."

DeMarco takes over for Sandy Brondello, who was let go in September shortly after New York was eliminated by the Phoenix Mercury in the opening round of the WNBA play-offs.

Brondello coached the Liberty for four seasons and led the franchise to its first WNBA title in 2024.

New York has many free agent openings on its roster, but Kolb said after the season he expected the core of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones to return.

"I'm incredibly honoured to join the Liberty and proud to help carry forward the standard this franchise has set - excellence on the court and a strong connection to the community," DeMarco said. "The chance to work with some of the greatest players in basketball, supported by an exceptional front office and ownership group, is the kind of opportunity every coach dreams of. I can’t wait to get started – building on the winning foundation and culture that make the New York Liberty so special."
