Brooks Koepka has become the first player to defect from LIV Golf so he can prioritise the needs of his family and stay closer to home.

Koepka was one of the Saudi-backed tour's signature signings when the league was launched in 2022 and still had one year remaining on his current deal.

The 35-year-old American won five events over four seasons on the tour and was the captain of Smash GC, which has now been passed over to Talor Gooch.

Koepka turned professional in 2012 and won nine PGA Tour events, along with five majors that include three PGA Championships and two US Open victories in 2017 and 2018.

"We have amicably and mutually agreed that Brooks Koepka will no longer compete in the LIV Golf League, following the 2025 season," LIV Golf chief executive Scott O'Neil said.

"Brooks is prioritising the needs of his family and staying closer to home.

"We appreciate the significant impact he has had on the game and wish him continued success, both on and off the course."

There had been speculation over Koepka's future for months and a possible return to the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour policy on banning players who have joined the rival league requires them to sit out for one year from their last participation, with the LIV season ending in August.

Koepka will also be eligible to join the DP World Tour and have exemptions to compete in golf's four major championships.
