'It's a clear penalty' – Arteta fumes after Arsenal denied spot-kick in Forest draw

Mikel Arteta was left fuming after claiming Arsenal should have had "a clear penalty" in their 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Gunners had the chance to move nine points clear at the Premier League summit after Manchester City lost to Manchester United earlier in the day, but could only extend their lead to seven.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus both saw efforts brilliantly kept out by Matz Sels as Arsenal were frustrated by a solid Forest defence, but they could have potentially taken home all three points as they had a shout for an 80th-minute penalty.

Ola Aina appeared to handle the ball in the box during a clearance, though the claim was dismissed after a VAR review as the arm was deemed to be in a natural position after it had come off his shoulder.

And Arteta was not pleased with the referee's decision not to give the league leaders a spot-kick.

"We obviously wanted to win the game, we knew the game was going to be very tough and very close as well, from the way that they play," Arteta told BBC Match of the Day.

"We created four big, big, big chances and a clear penalty, but we weren't able to win the game.

"I've just seen the replays, I think it's a clear intention to clear the ball inside, and it's a clear penalty, so I don't understand why it's not been given."

Arsenal have now had consecutive goalless draws in the Premier League for the first time since their opening two games of the 2012-13 season, having also drawn a blank against Liverpool.

Arteta's side had 15 shots throughout the game, worth 2.1 expected goals (xG), but only three of those were on target, with each coming in the second half.

Gabriel Martinelli also had the opportunity to break the deadlock before the break, somehow steering wide from point-blank range instead of poking it over the line.

"We could've been better, but as well, this is happening all around the league for every single team," Arteta added.

"We have to improve and be better, especially when we create four big chances, you have to put them away.

"You have to produce that moment. We've created certain moments, but credit to them as well because they are very well-organised and they disrupt your momentum in clever ways as well, all the time. We knew that.

"We tried to, at the end, find a goal. I don't think we conceded a single shot [on target], again. But that's the margins, and we didn't find a way to win it."
