Shubman Gill believes "it would've been a stinker" if India had lost to New Zealand in the second ODI of their five-match series.

After winning the first ODI by five wickets via the DLS method, India won the second by four runs in the same fashion, following a rain-affected encounter in Wellington.

New Zealand were bowled out for just 134 after being put in to bat, with Daryl Mitchell's battling 55 off 104 balls giving the hosts some hope after Gurnoor Brar (4-30) starred with the ball.

India's chase was off to a poor start after captain Gill was dismissed for a golden duck, while Virat Kohli (7) also failed to make his mark.

Kyle Jamieson (3-35) and Jacob Duffy (3-35) took wickets at regular intervals to stop India from gaining any momentum, and the Men in Blue lost Naman Dhir (12) and Anshul Kamboj (1) in quick succession before the rain returned.

Gill acknowledged how costly those last two wickets could have been, but was glad to get over the line at 113-7.

"It wasn't easy batting. Getting them out at 134, I thought it'd be an easy target, but it wasn't," said the India captain. "Happy we got there in the end.

"In the last match, Gurnoor bowled really well too. As he gets more experience, he'll get more consistent.

"He already has the pace and bounce. Most of the seamers have all the qualities. International cricket is about performing under pressure.

"The pitch was challenging, but we lost two extra wickets than we'd have liked in the end.

"The last two shots [Dhir and Kamboj wickets] would not have looked good had we lost via DLS. It would've been a stinker but happy we got there in the end."

The third ODI takes place in Hamilton on Tuesday, with India one win away from clinching a series win.
