Fabian Hurzeler believes the improvements in the small margins were the key reason why Brighton ended a six-match winless run with a 2-0 win over Brentford on Saturday.

The damage was done by Diego Gomez and Danny Welbeck's goals in the first half, which helped seal a first top-flight away win since November against Nottingham Forest.

Indeed, it was just the Seagulls' second Premier League win since the start of December (P14 W2 D6 L6), with this their first victory in seven (D3 L3).

Brighton moved up to 12th after their win, and Hurzeler was thrilled to see the togetherness in his side after a difficult spell.

"I wouldn't say it was easy, but we stuck together," Hurzeler told BBC Sport. "We played really good football in the first half, we controlled the match.

"We controlled the key moments quite well. These were the small margins that were missing in the last weeks."

James Milner made history by breaking the Premier League appearance record as he played in his 654th match, surpassing the previous holder Gareth Barry.

And the 40-year-old hopes he can continue to be a role model for the rest of the players in the squad, with Milner adding: "It's the drive and hunger.

"You want to be the best every day whether it's a game or training. I'm surrounded by a lot of young lads.

"I want to contribute to their careers, push them and help them get to the highest level as quick as possible."

Milner remains unbeaten against seven Premier League sides out of the 43 different teams he has faced over his 24-year career, and he's ended up on the winning side in all four of his matches against Brentford.

The former England international is confident he can continue playing for a little while longer.

Milner added: "Hopefully I've proved in the last few games that I can still contribute on the pitch.

"I'm delighted to be part of it and the dressing room. It's full of incredible characters and very good players, and a good up and coming manager."

Brentford boss Keith Andrews admitted that a poor first half was a large contributing factor as to why his side fell to a rare home defeat.

The Bees have now lost two of their last three home Premier League games (D1), as many defeats as in their previous 15 at the Gtech Community Stadium (W9 D4).

"I thought first half we didn't reach the levels we have done pretty consistently," Andrews said.

"We have been performing at a high level, and today we didn't do that. The second half was a big improvement, but overall it's a disappointing day."
