Josh Coburn was at the double as Millwall came from behind to beat Middlesbrough in a potentially crucial clash in the Championship promotion race.

Boro were hoping to consolidate their grip on second place on Friday, yet instead, Millwall surged into second place ahead of the rest of the day's action.

Coburn was their hero as his goals turned the match on its head at the Riverside Stadium, where the hosts missed plenty of chances.

Boro hit the front after 26 minutes when Dael Fry headed home from Alan Browne's deep cross.

Yet Boro's failure to clear their lines from a set-piece proved costly in the 58th minute, as Coburn's acrobatic close-range attempt crossed the line.

And after some last-ditch defending at the other end, Millwall struck the decisive blow when Coburn coolly curled into the right-hand corner in the 86th minute.

Data Debrief: A bad time to slip up

That is now four games without a win for Boro, who had 32 shots but were profligate in front of goal, failing to capitalise on their 3.12 expected goals (xG).

Boro lost a home game after leading at half-time in the Championship for the first time since December 2023 against Hull City.

And the Riverside is no fortress. Boro are now on a five-game winless streak at home, their longest such run in two years.

Millwall, meanwhile, have won 10 of their 20 away games in the league this term. This is just the second time they have reached double figures on the road in a single second-tier campaign, doing so in 1987-88, when they were promoted to the top flight (10).
