Lando Norris says he hopes "this is just the beginning" after storming to pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Norris has been a dominant force in Austria so far, topping both the second and third practice sessions before beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to pole by half a second.

Piastri, who leads the drivers' championship by 22 points, finished third, but was unable to complete his last run in the third qualifying session, as was Max Verstappen, due to yellow flags caused by a Pierre Gasly spin.

Lewis Hamilton completed his best qualifying lap of the year, sitting in fourth, ahead of George Russell and Liam Lawson, who also earned his highest such finish.

Verstappen, who had been on course to be on the front row before being disrupted by Gasly, finished seventh, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto, who reached Q3 for the first time, sitting in eighth. Kimi Antonelli and Gasly rounded out the top 10.

Norris' 0.521-second lead over Leclerc is the biggest pole margin of the 2025 Formula One season so far and has earned his third pole start of the year, converting the previous two into race wins.

And he was delighted with Saturday's performance as he looks to carry that confidence into Sunday’s race.

"It was a good lap, that's for sure," Norris said. "I guess it was just by little bit by little.

"I knew there were a few places that if I could just get it right, I still had quite a bit more time - and I did exactly that.

"I did what I planned to do, and when I plan to do something, and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well. Very happy, a good day and it's been a good weekend for me so far. So hopefully we can keep it up.

"It's a long season. I savour this moment, especially because this has been some of my tougher moments in qualy. So, to put a lap in like today, and performance like this weekend like I have, was pleasing for myself. But I'm excited. It's a long race tomorrow, but it's more that it's just a long season.

"I'm very happy with today, but I want to prove it to myself over and over again, and hopefully this is just the beginning of it."

Piastri confirmed after the qualifying session that he did not make it back onto the track for his last run after Gasly's spin.

He has led the drivers' championship in the last six Grand Prix races, and he acknowledged that he has work to do on Sunday if he wants to hold off Norris, but he is determined to get a good result.

"It's the fact that I didn't get to start [the lap], that was the problem," he said. "I had Gasly's spin at the last corner, so I didn't even open my second lap.

"Lando has been very quick all weekend, and it would've been a tough challenge, but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row.

"Always a shame when you don't even get the chance, but we can still have a good race from there. Sometimes it's just not your day.

"Our pace this weekend has looked very strong. The Ferrari pace looked good as well, which was a bit of a surprise, but I think we've still got some opportunities tomorrow. I'm not planning on finishing third, that's for sure."
