The Atlanta Hawks and guard CJ McCollum have agreed to a one-year, $21million extension for next season.

McCollum was set to become a free agent on July 1 but will instead return to the Hawks, who acquired the 2015-16 NBA’s Most Improved Player in January in the deal that sent four-time All-Star Trae Young to the Washington Wizards.

McCollum, 34, moved into Atlanta’s starting line-up on February 22 and averaged 18.4 points, 4.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds in the next 23 games.

The Hawks went 19-4 in those contests to secure the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and a first-round play-off matchup with the New York Knicks.

McCollum averaged 27 points over the first three games of the series to help Atlanta grab a 2-1 lead, but the eventual NBA champion Knicks won the next three meetings while holding McCollum to 11.3 points per game.

McCollum was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 10th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft and also played for the New Orleans Pelicans before they traded him to Washington last July.

He’s averaged 19.5 points, 3.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 863 career games.

McCollum’s 2,180 made three-pointers are the 10th-most among active NBA players.
