Scotland trio Darcy Graham, Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman have been called up by the British and Irish Lions ahead of their series against Australia.

All three played for Scotland in their surprise defeat by Fiji on Saturday, and have bolstered the Lions' squad to 44 players ahead of the first Test this Saturday.

Graham, Sutherland and Ashman will provide cover to coach Andy Farrell for their match against a First Nations and Pasifika XV, which takes place next Tuesday.

Their arrival will swell the Scottish contingent in the Lions squad to 11, with Graham immediately leaving Scotland's camp in New Zealand to join up with the Lions.

Sutherland and Ashman will remain with Gregor Townsend's squad preparing for Scotland's final tour match against Samoa, and will link up with the squad this weekend.

Graham, who was given two yellows and sent off against Fiji in Suva on Saturday, will not have to serve a suspension.

The Scottish wing has been in impressive form of late and was considered unlucky not to be originally involved in Farrell's initial 38-man squad that was announced in May.

Sutherland already has experience as a Lions player, having played in two Tests, and six games overall, on their tour of South Africa in 2021.

Ashman made his Scotland debut against Australia in November 2021, scoring the decisive try in a 15-13 victory at Murrayfield.

And Lions captain Maro Itoje believes that the trio will only improve the quality of the squad as they prepare to face Australia.

"The boss has called them in because he believes they will help the Lions to achieve their goal of winning a Test series," said Itoje.

"All of the players that have been called in are quality players. They are players like everyone else in the team, have a high level of experience and have achieved things in their career.

"We are in this together. It's not us and them. It doesn't matter if there's a late call-up. We've seen in the past how late call-ups have had huge impact on the tour in positive ways.

"I have no doubt that everyone who has been called up will play a significant role in helping the team achieve its goal."

Ahead of the first Test, Farrell has already added full-back Jamie Osborne, hooker Jamie George and prop Tom Clarkson to his ranks.
