Taylor Fritz has won the Washington Open for the first time after defeating teenager Rafael Jodar in Monday's final.

Home favourite Fritz won 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in an hour and 50 minutes to win his first ATP Tour title of the year and his 11th overall in his career.

The showpiece, which was delayed to Monday due to bad weather, was closely matched to start with as both players saved one break point each and held serve on their way to a tie-break in the first set.

Jodar blinked first in the final, losing two points on serve in the tie-break as Fritz won the opening set.

The 28-year-old seemed to have all the momentum as back-to-back breaks saw him race into a 3-0 lead in the second, but Jodar pulled a break back.

It was not enough for the Spaniard, however, as Fritz held serve from there on out, despite needing five match points and saving one break point while serving for the title.

Fritz firing on home soil

Fritz had already lost in the finals at Dallas, Halle and Stuttgart in 2026, but made sure his poor run in championship matches was halted in Washington.

He has now won his first Tour title above ATP 250 level since 2022, when he won in Tokyo, while he is also just the second American to win the Washington Open since 2008 (Sebastian Korda – 2024).

And the win comes at a great time for Fritz as the US Open, the final grand slam of the year, takes place later this month.

There is also plenty of reason for optimism for 19-year-old Jodar, who was in search of his second title of the season.

Jodar will move to a career-high 15 in the ATP Tour rankings following his run in Washington.
