Ugo Humbert produced one of his best displays of the season as he reached the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors with a straight-sets win over top seed Taylor Fritz.

Humbert, who had lost his previous two meetings with Fritz, put on a sensational performance to clinch a 6-3 6-4 triumph over the world number four on Thursday.

Fritz initially started well against Humbert, but a mammoth fourth game that saw the American miss four game points proved decisive as his opponent was able to get ahead.

Humbert took the first set at the third time of asking, and carried his momentum into the second as he got the better of Fritz's serve once again in the fifth game.

And while Fritz was able to hold serve for the remainder, that earlier break proved costly as Humbert sealed his progression with a fierce backhand that was returned long.

The Frenchman will now take on qualifier Reilly Opelka for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

And Fritz's compatriot Ben Shelton suffered the same fate earlier in the day, with the second seed losing in straight sets to Spaniard Jaume Munar.

Munar claimed just the fourth top 10 triumph of his career with a 6-3 6-4 victory over 2024 finalist Shelton, whose hopes of reaching the season-ending ATP Finals took a big hit.

Thursday's results mean Casper Ruud is the highest-ranked seed left in Basel after he got the better of home hope Stan Wawrinka to book his spot in the quarter-finals.

Wawrinka, who was aiming to become the first Swiss winner of the tournament since Roger Federer in 2019, proved no match for Ruud, who stormed to a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) victory.

After being put through his paces in the first round by Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot, Fritz was unable to produce another turnaround here.

But that is not discrediting Humbert's brilliant performance, serving up seven aces to Fritz's six as well as saving both break points that he faced.

Humbert's victory was his first of 2025 over a top 10 opponent, while it was the sixth of his career on his beloved hard court surface.
