New Zealand duo Devon Conway and Tom Latham made history as they helped the hosts set West Indies a daunting target to win the third Test.

Conway and Latham became the first pair of openers to score centuries in each innings of the same first-class match as New Zealand reached 306-2 before declaring on Sunday in Mount Maunganui.

Black Caps captain Latham followed up his 137 from the first innings with a knock of 101, while Conway scored 100 after plundering 227 earlier in the match.

Kavem Hodge (2-80) ended both of their stays at the crease, with Kane Williamson (40 not out) and Rachin Ravindra (46 not out) doing further damage before New Zealand declared.

Set a target of 462 to win, there was an onus on West Indies to start well, with their best hope realistically being a draw.

Brandon King did just that, scoring an unbeaten 37, while John Campbell added just two runs from 50 balls at the other end, meaning the Windies will start day five trailing by 418.

Data Debrief: The history boys

It is an extraordinary achievement for Conway and Latham, who have ensured their names will go down in the all-time record books.

Conway also became just the 10th player to score a double hundred and a century in a men's Test, and the first from New Zealand.

Latham, meanwhile, is the first Black Caps captain to score 100+ in each innings of a Test.
