The New York Liberty have set a "standard" that the Brooklyn Nets must now meet, after raising their WNBA title banner at Barclays Center on Saturday.

That is the view of Liberty forward Breanna Stewart, who hopes the 2024 champions have laid down a marker to the NBA franchise, who share their home court.

Two-time WNBA MVP Stewart, who is now a three-time champion, was speaking after the Liberty began their title defence with a 92-78 win over the Las Vegas Aces.

"I think it creates a standard for anyone that comes into Barclays," she said, having scored 25 points against the Aces. "Whether it's us playing or the Nets.

"[It creates a] championship mindset and mentality among this franchise. It's a special thing.

"I've been looking forward to having this moment and celebrating with the fans."

The Nets have not won a title since the NBA-ABA merger, and last played in the NBA Finals in 2003. The 2024-25 season ended with a miserable 26-56 record as they missed out on the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

But while the Nets have a long path to glory ahead of them, the Liberty are hoping to quickly add to their first title with a second.

Sabrina Ionescu told the crowd: "We're so thankful, thank you guys for being part of this championship journey for us. We've got to run it back. We need the energy the love and support."
