Zverev beats Cerundolo to set up 'toughest test' against Sinner
Alexander Zverev cruised to a straight-sets victory over Francisco Cerundolo at the Miami Open to set up a blockbuster semi-final clash against Jannik Sinner.
Third seed Zverev prevailed 6-1 6-2 in just 65 minutes to set up what he described as "the toughest test" against in-form Sinner.
His out-of-sorts Argentine opponent – who had impressively shocked Indian Wells runner-up Daniil Medvedev en route to the last eight – was unable to even force a break-point opportunity across the one-sided contest.
The win sealed a 25th Masters 1000 semi-final appearance for Zverev, and this is the first time he has made the last four in the same season at both Indian Wells and Miami.
"It will be the toughest test," Zverev said, per the ATP website, about the prospect of facing Sinner, who is in remarkable form.
"I am looking forward to it. I have been feeling quite well, and hopefully it will continue."
Facing Sinner at the moment is certainly a daunting task. The Italian's win over Frances Tiafoe, which, like Zverev's victory, was a comfortable straight-sets triumph, saw him make it 14 consecutive wins across the Miami Open and Indian Wells – the Sunshine Double – without dropping a single set.
3 - Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will be just the second pair to meet in the SF at three consecutive ATP Masters 1000 events, after Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Monte Carlo-Rome 2022). Fixture.#MiamiOpen | @MiamiOpen @atptour pic.twitter.com/yeiR5rlXdF

Dating back to the Miami Open's inauguration in 1985, Sinner is the first man to ever achieve that feat. He is also the first man to reach as many as four semi-finals in his first five appearances at the Miami Open.
Perhaps most worryingly for Zverev, despite their headline head-to-head looking reasonably competitive at 7-4, Sinner has actually won the past six meetings.
That six-match streak includes three victories over Zverev in Masters 1000 semi-final clashes and their meeting a fortnight ago at Indian Wells.
However, Zverev has been in impressive form this season, rarely troubled so far in Miami after his semi-final appearances at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.
Asked about his recent change to a more aggressive playing style, the German added: "If it pays off [this] fast, it is even better. I was [expecting to struggle a little bit [initially], but I am feeling well on the court."
Data Debrief: Zverev turns the tables on Cerundolo
Cerundolo was initially a problematic opponent for Zverev, as he won the first three matches they played.
However, Zverev has impressively turned the tables of late, winning the next four meetings to take a 4-3 lead in the rivalry. Each of those victories, including this one and their other recent meeting at the Australian Open, came in straight sets.
So next up is Sinner. Having also done battle with each other in Paris towards the end of 2025 and more recently at Indian Wells, Zverev and the Italian will become just the second pair to meet in the semi-finals at three consecutive Masters 1000 events.
That ties a record that already involves Zverev, who memorably battled Stefanos Tsitsipas in three straight last-four clashes at this level in 2022 (between Monte Carlo and Rome).
