WNBA star Ionescu avoids serious injury, but still out at least two weeks
WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu will miss the 2026 season opener due to a hurt left ankle and foot.
Thankfully for the New York Liberty, her injury isn't considered too serious.
Ionescu was injured in a preseason game on Sunday when she landed awkwardly on her ankle and foot on a drive to the basket. Her foot appeared to get tangled with the Connecticut Sun's Diamond Miller.
An MRI on Monday revealed no major injury for Ionescu, who injured the same ankle as a rookie in 2020.
According to multiple reports, the team said she will be re-evaluated in two weeks, meaning she'll miss Friday's season opener against Connecticut.

An All-Star and All-WNBA Second Team selection each of the last four seasons, Ionescu is considered one of the league's top scorers.
In 38 games last season, she averaged 18.2 points, 5.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds. Her average of 2.1 made 3-pointers per game ranked ninth in the WNBA.
The Liberty were tied with the Phoenix Mercury for the league's fourth-best record last year at 27-17, and two seasons ago in 2024, Ionescu helped New York win the WNBA championship.
