Wimbledon: Djokovic downs Muller to survive day of upsets
Novak Djokovic ensured his name was not added to a list of high-profile casualties from the first round at Wimbledon following his victory over Alexandre Muller.
On a day that saw Alexander Zverev become the fourth top-10 seeded player to be eliminated from the men's draw, Djokovic kept his cool to earn a 6-1 6-7 (7-9) 6-2 6-2 win.
It appeared as though the seven-time champion was cruising into the second round at the All England Club after taking the opening set in just 30 minutes on Centre Court.
But Muller, making just his third appearance at Wimbledon, matched Djokovic for long periods, forcing a tie-break which the Frenchman was able to edge after saving a set point.
However, Djokovic's experience eventually told as he cruised through the third set, winning the final five games in a row to ensure the second round was within his grasp.
And he clinched it with both hands with a dominant fourth-set showing, sealing his progression to the next round with a huge serve that Muller could only return long.
Up next for the 24-time grand slam winner is a clash with home hopeful Daniel Evans, who overcame compatriot Jay Clarke in straight sets earlier on Tuesday.

Data Debrief: Djokovic survives day of shocks
Across the men's and women's draws, eight top-10 seeded players have been eliminated in the opening round at Wimbledon, the highest tally at a single grand slam event in the Open Era, but Djokovic was able to prevail to boost his chances of adding another title to his trophy cabinet.
Indeed, the Serbian maintained his perfect record in the first round at SW19. He has won all 20 of his opening-round matches at the All England Club since making his debut at the grass-court major back in 2005.
He is now the first player to win 20 first-round matches in men's singles at Wimbledon during the Open Era.
But it was far from a perfect start to his campaign. Despite serving 22 aces to Muller's eight, Djokovic was only able to convert seven of the 27 break points he created for himself, and his efficiency on that front will have to improve against better opposition as the tournament progresses.
