Wembanyama to return for NBA Cup semis
Superstar center Victor Wembanyama will be back in the lineup on Saturday, when the San Antonio Spurs will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in an NBA Cup semifinal game, the team announced Friday.
The towering Frenchman has missed the last 12 games with left calf tightness.
The Spurs had listed Wembanyama as probable in Thursday’s injury report but confirmed his return on Friday.
Wembanyama’s return should be a major boost for the Spurs as they face the reigning NBA champion Thunder, who are 24-1 and have won 16 consecutive games.
Despite playing without their best player, youthful San Antonio was 9-3 without Wembanyama, including road wins over the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers.
The Spurs enter play on Friday tied for fourth in the Western Conference but are just a game behind second-place Denver.
Wembanyama’s return on Saturday could also fuel the Spurs’ growing rivalry with the Thunder and with fellow lanky big man Chet Holmgren.
In his third NBA season, Wembanyama is averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.58 blocked shots per game.
With Wembanyama missing 12 games with his calf issue, he can only miss five more the rest of the season to be eligible for All-NBA teams and individual awards.
