Crysencio Summerville admits he was surprised to be included in the Netherlands' World Cup squad, but the West Ham winger is "fired up" ahead of the tournament.

Summerville scored five goals and provided two assists in 31 Premier League appearances in 2025-26 but was unable to prevent West Ham from dropping into the Championship.

The former Leeds United winger made 29 of his appearances as a starter, and only Jarrod Bowen attempted (125) or completed (53) more dribbles than him among West Ham players (51/118) in the Premier League.

Summerville has never been capped by his country at the senior level, missing their friendlies against Norway and Ecuador in March due to injury, though he has appeared for their youth teams up to under-21 level.

Now, he has a chance to help the Oranje win the World Cup for the first time – they open their Group F campaign against Japan on June 14 in Arlington.

"So much emotion was unleashed," Summerville told ESPN Netherlands of the moment he was called up. "Of course, the coach has to see you, to see if you fit into the group.

"That's in terms of playing style, but also how you fit in with the group. So it was quite a surprise.

"I think they [coaching staff] have seen a number of matches, so in terms of quality, they know what I can do. I also know a lot of guys from my youth, so that's all good.

"I am fired up. I can't wait to get started. From the first whistle, it's full steam ahead for me. If the coach puts me in the starting line-up, I'll be there."

The 2026 World Cup will be the Netherlands' 12th finals appearance. Their three runner-up finishes are the most of any team without winning the trophy (1974, 1978 and 2010).

Despite never being world champions, they have won 54.5% of their World Cup matches overall (30/55, penalty shoot-outs excluded), with only Brazil (66.7%) and Germany (60.7%) boasting a better win rate in the history of the tournament.
