Sinner and Fonseca set for Indian Wells showdown
Jannik Sinner and Joao Fonseca will go head-to-head for the first time after the pair progressed to the Indian Wells Open round of 16.
Sinner, who is on the hunt for his first title at Indian Wells, downed Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-2.
The Italian has made the fourth round in each of his five appearances in the Californian desert, though he did have to recover from dropping serve to love in the opening game.
Brazilian wonderkid Fonseca, meanwhile, overcame Tommy Paul 6-2 6-3.
The 19-year-old, who clawed back two match points in the second round against Karen Khachanov, has reached the fourth round of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time.
"I don't need to say that Jannik is a huge player. He won several titles. Him and Carlos [Alcaraz], they are winning everything," said Fonseca.
"So just rest tomorrow and then Tuesday back on court, trying to put as much pressure as I can and trying to play like [I did today]."
96 - Jannik Sinner has claimed a 96th career ATP Masters 1000 match win, equalling Fabio Fognini (96) for the most wins of any Italian player since the format’s introduction in 1990. Already.#TennisParadise | @BNPPARIBASOPEN @atptour pic.twitter.com/ZhCrss7qst

Data Debrief: Sinner's century in sight
Sinner now has 96 match wins at ATP Masters 1000 level, meaning he will hit a ton of victories should he go all the way at Indian Wells.
He has now drawn level with Fabio Fognini for the most match wins at this level among Italian players since the format's introduction in 1990.
Fonseca, meanwhile, is the first Brazilian to reach the fourth round at a Masters 1000 tournament since Thiago Monteiro in 2024 (Italian Open), and the first in Indian Wells since Thomaz Bellucci in 2012.
