George Russell claimed his second race win of the Formula One season as he edged out Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Russell, who previously triumphed in Austria in 2024, had not won a race since his season-opening victory in Melbourne.

The Mercedes driver had a fierce tussle with Verstappen, who was in the lead when he pitted on the 50th lap.

Verstappen could not snatch the advantage back from Russell, however, as the Briton held firm to end his wait for a victory, despite a wobble when he went wide on lap 58.

Russell's team-mate and drivers' championship leader Kimi Antonelli placed in third, just three tenths of a second behind Verstappen, who claimed second at Red Bull's home race.

Oscar Piastri nipped in ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who followed up his victory in Barcelona with a solid fifth-placed finish, albeit he did drop down from third.

Reigning champion Lando Norris placed seventh, behind Isack Hadjar, with Hamilton's Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc enduring a disappointing day in eighth, after he had qualified in second.

Russell matches Bottas as Verstappen gives Red Bull some wings

Mercedes are flying high at the top of the Constructors' Standings, but Russell has been playing second fiddle to Antonelli this season.

But with Hamilton triumphing last time out, it was just important for Mercedes to get back on the winning track, and they will no doubt be happy to share the victories around.

Russell, who is into second in the championship standings, started on pole after a fantastic qualifying session, meaning he has secured three of the last four pole positions, having also done so in Canada and Barcelona. It was only the second time he has claimed consecutive pole positions in his F1 career.

This was his 101st race for Mercedes, which sees him draw level with Valtteri Bottas as the driver with the third-most races for the team.

The winner of the Austrian Grand Prix has started from the front row of the grid at 11 of the last 12 editions, but Verstappen, who is the record winner at this race (four times) gave it a good go.

Verstappen extended his record at the event for the most podium finishes (seven), too.

Norris triumphed in Austria last year, and Russell's win means no driver has won consecutive editions of this race since Verstappen, back in 2018 and 2019.
