Lando Norris took advantage of a 10-second penalty for Oscar Piastri to win the British Grand Prix for the first time, as Nico Hulkenberg claimed his first podium position on a dramatic day at Silverstone.

Norris finished a chaotic race behind drivers' championship leader Piastri, but the Australian was penalised for a safety car violation in wet and wild conditions.

Piastri was punished for "erratic braking" when racing resumed on lap 22, with the incident leading polesitter Max Verstappen to spin out of contention and allowing Sauber's Hulkenberg to snatch his first podium at the 239th attempt.

Treacherous weather conditions were a theme of the day, with the safety car first appearing when the heavens opened on lap 14. Within one lap of racing resuming, it reappeared due to Isack Hadjar driving straight into the back of Kimi Antonelli when totally unsighted.

The next restart saw even greater drama as Piastri suddenly slowed, forcing Verstappen ahead. When Piastri made his move, the Dutchman spun and dropped all the way to 11th, cursing the Australian’s driving over team radio.

The FIA swiftly confirmed Piastri's penalty, and with the two McLarens pulling clear of the pack, that turned the remainder of the race into something of a procession for Norris.

Piastri described his punishment as "unfair" and called for Norris to hand top spot back, but that request fell on deaf ears as the Brit clinched back-to-back race wins.

There was also a memorable accomplishment behind the McLarens, with Hulkenberg holding off a challenge from home favourite Lewis Hamilton to finish third.

Hamilton had previously finished on the podium at 12 consecutive editions of the British Grand Prix, last failing to do so in 2013 (also finished fourth).

Verstappen passed the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll to finish fifth, with Alex Albon placing eighth and Fernando Alonso coming ninth.

George Russell rounded out the top 10, having been in contention for a podium finish before an early switch to slick tires sent him into a huge spin on lap 40.

Data Debrief: Firsts for Norris and Hulkenberg

The eighth victory of Norris' Formula One career – and his fourth of the season – was his most memorable yet.

He is the 36th different driver to win a grand prix in his home country, while he has more victories in his last four grands prix (three) as in his previous 13 (two).

Hulkenberg, meanwhile, claimed the first podium finish of his 15-year career in F1, with Silverstone being the German's most successful circuit in terms of points scored (64).
