The Detroit Pistons defeated the Orlando Magic 116-94 in Game 7 of their first-round play-off series on Sunday to become the 15th team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 deficit.

Top-seeded Detroit captured its first postseason series since also defeating Orlando in 2008 and moved on to a matchup in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who defeated the Toronto Raptors 114-102 in Game 7 on Sunday.

The Pistons will host the fourth-seeded Cavs in Game 1 on Tuesday after the Central Division rivals split four meetings during the regular season.

Cade Cunningham led the way again for Detroit on Sunday with 32 points, 12 assists and two blocks, and Tobias Harris scored 30 to go along with nine rebounds and three steals.

They became the first Pistons teammates to each score at least 30 points in a play-off game since Bob Lanier (33) and Howard Porter (30) in 1977.

Cunningham averaged 32.4 points, 7.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds in the series and Harris contributed 21.6 points and 8.1 boards per game after averaging 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in the regular season.

“We were pushed to the limit," Cunningham said. "And it made us really reflect on how we were playing, what got us to this position and what made us win as many games as we won in the regular season.

“And it got us back to playing the basketball that we knew we were capable of.”

Paolo Banchero had 38 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the eighth-seeded Magic, who blew a 24-point lead in Game 6.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft has averaged 27.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists over the last three postseasons, but the Magic have failed to get past the first round each time.

"... I can't say we're good enough to be in the (NBA) Finals or the Eastern finals, because the last three years, we've had the same result,” Banchero said.

In Cleveland, Jarrett Allen, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden helped the Cavs advance to the semis for the third consecutive season.

Allen had 22 points, 19 rebounds, three blocks and two steals, Mitchell also scored 22 and Harden added 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“We’re going to have to be mentally and physically tough to beat (Detroit),” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said.

“No. 1 seed, they’ve had a great year, they’re the favourites. We go in there as underdogs, which is a challenge, but I think it is going to be a similar series.

“… Hopefully this series prepared us for that.”

Toronto was without Brandon Ingram for the second straight contest because of right heel inflammation, and after forcing a Game 7 with the All-Star forward on the sidelines, the fifth-seeded Raptors couldn’t overcome his absence Sunday.

Fellow All-Star Scottie Barnes posted 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Raptors, and RJ Barrett had 23 points, six assists, four boards and three steals.

Toronto played the entire series without Immanuel Quickley due to a hamstring injury after the starting guard averaged 16.4 points, 5.9 assists, four rebounds and 1.31 steals in 70 games during the regular season.

“We don’t look at excuses that we are missing players, we are tired,” third-year Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic said.

“I am really, really proud of this group and the fight that they brought."
