Jakub Mensik reached the second round at Queen’s with a three-set win over Cameron Norrie.

The 19-year-old won 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 6-1 in just over two hours to eliminate home hope Norrie.

Mensik had to claw back two set points in a cagey opener, but was then firmly dispatched in the second set, with Norrie dropping only one game.

However, Mensik matched Norrie with a 6-1 set of his own to win the contest. He raced into a 5-0 lead in the decider before sealing the victory with his first match point.

“It is my first match on grass this season so it's always difficult find the rhythm and also to play against the home guy too,” Mensik told BBC Sport.

“It was a rollercoaster match. I'm glad I finished the first set strong and even though I lost focus in the second I came back strong.”

Eighth-seed Mensik will face Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round.

Holger Rune also progressed to the last 16 after beating lucky loser Christopher O’Connell.

Rune broke once in each set to win the match 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 18 minutes.

Mensik and Rune will be joined by Dan Evans after the Briton downed seventh-seed Frances Tiafoe 7-5 6-2.

Elsewhere, Daniil Medvedev won 6-3 6-3 against Daniel Altmaier to set up a second-round clash with Quentin Halys at the Halle Open in Germany.

Mensik struck an impressive 20 aces on his way to victory over Norrie.

He also became just the second teenager to earn a main draw win at Queen’s this decade, after Jack Draper.

Norrie may be out, but Evans is still flying the flag for Britain. The last time he beat Tiafoe, he went on to win the Washington Open in 2023, so the omens could be good for a British champion at Queen's.
