Medvedev delighted after early improvements help see off Tiafoe in Brisbane
Daniil Medvedev was impressed with his serving game during his straight-sets win against Frances Tiafoe at the Brisbane International.
The first seed won 6-3 6-2 in 61 minutes to reach the quarter-finals in Australia, where he will face Kamil Majchrzak.
A single break in the first, which was converted at the fourth time of asking, was enough for Medvedev to take the lead, and he did not look back from there as he secured the victory with his first match point.
It was a very strong performance with the ball in hand from Medvedev, who won 91% of his first-serve points (31/34) and did not concede a single break point.
He also served nine aces as he extended his head-to-head record with Tiafoe to 6-1 in his favour.
"The court is pretty fast so you need to serve well, and I am happy with the way I served," said Medvedev after reaching his 90th tour-level quarter-final.
"I thought I played much better than in the first round, didn't face a break point, and that puts a lot of pressure on the opponent.
"I had a couple of good games on his serve and that was enough today."

Sebastian Korda joined Medvedev in the last eight after Jiri Lehecka, who won the competition last year, was forced to retire with an ankle injury.
Korda won the first set 6-3 before Lehecka was unable to continue after saving two break points in the third game of the second.
Eighth seed Learner Tien was also knocked out in the last 16 after losing 6-4 6-2 to compatriot Alex Michelsen.
Michelsen broke Tien's serve in the very first game of the match to take the opening set before back-to-back breaks in the second helped secure a routine win.
