Man Utd must go back to their DNA after Amorim 'experiment', says Neville
Manchester United must appoint a head coach who shares the club's "DNA" and stop experimenting following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, says Gary Neville.
United dispensed with Amorim's services on Monday after he criticised the club's hierarchy following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
The former Sporting CP boss departed with United sixth in the Premier League table, though he oversaw their worst-ever campaign in the competition in terms of position (15th), points (42) and goals scored (44) in 2024-25.
Amorim attracted criticism for his staunch refusal to move away from a 3-4-3 system, even when it became clear the shape did not suit the players at his disposal last campaign.
Throughout Amorim's reign, Ange Postecoglou (21) was the only manager to lose more Premier League matches than the Portuguese coach's 19, and Postecoglou masterminded Tottenham's 1-0 defeat of United in last season's Europa League final.
Neville believes one of the major issues to plague the Red Devils since Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013 has been an inability to go back to their roots.
"There is a very good video online where Bobby Charlton talks about what Man Utd is as a football club," Neville told Sky Sports News.
"It's about adventurous, exciting football, playing young players, entertaining the crowd. Man Utd must take risks and be courageous in playing attacking football.
"Man Utd have got to appoint a manager that fits the DNA of their club.

"Ajax will never change for anybody, Barcelona will never change for anybody. I don't believe Man Utd should change for anybody.
"You can't say these managers are not good coaches, but they've all come in with different ideas, different styles of play, different philosophies and none of them fit the Man Utd way.
"The club have to find a manager now who has got experience, who's willing to play fast, entertaining, attacking, aggressive football."
Amorim only achieved 15 victories in 47 Premier League matches, giving him the worst win ratio (32%) of any United boss in the competition's history.
No other United coach – permanent or temporary – has recorded a win ratio lower than 42% (Ralf Rangnick, 10/24), with the other nine men to lead the Red Devils in the competition all winning at least 50% of their games.
But Neville believes there has been a common theme connecting all their recent managerial appointments.
"Louis van Gaal had his own philosophy. Jose Mourinho plays a certain style of football. So does David Moyes. Erik ten Hag, again, a very different style of football to what Man Utd ordinarily would play," Neville said.
"Ruben Amorim, it was a very different style of football than Man Utd would ordinarily expect. The experiments have got to stop."
Darren Fletcher will take charge of United when they visit Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday, with the club then expected to appoint an interim coach for the rest of the season.
Reports have suggested Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under consideration for that role, having previously led United from 2018 to 2021, with Jonny Evans also in the frame.
