Clayton Kershaw reached a milestone in MLB on Thursday, while Mike Clevinger's San Diego Padres debut did not go to plan.

Kershaw, 32, became the third youngest pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,500 strikeouts, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1.

The left-hander struck out eight in six innings, giving up just one hit in another impressive performance.

Only Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan (31 years, 101 days) and Walter Johnson (31 years, 197 days) were younger than Kershaw when they achieved the feat.

Traded to the Padres on Monday, Clevinger made his debut in a 2-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

He got through six innings, conceding seven hits and two runs, but the Padres managed just three hits against the Angels.

Angels pitcher Andrew Heaney struck out six over seven innings of work.

The Philadelphia Phillies completed a four-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 6-5 win.

Zack Greinke is now 3-0 this season. He struck out nine in six innings, giving up three runs as the Houston Astros enjoyed an 8-4 win over the Texas Rangers.

 

Bad Bryant

A three-time All-Star, Kris Bryant struggled for the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. He went 0-for-five and struck out twice in a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

 

Inside-the-park HR

While the Nationals were beaten, Trea Turner went three-for-five with three RBIs, including an inside-the-park home run.
