'It was headers and volleys' – Edwards hails Wolves after mud-soaked Grimsby win

Rob Edwards described Wolves' 1-0 FA Cup victory over Grimsby Town as "an aggressive game of headers and volleys" after heavy rain made the Blundell Park pitch almost unplayable.

Santiago Bueno's close-range finish secured Wolves' place in the fifth round of the competition as they put their Premier League struggles to one side on Sunday.

Wolves have now reached the fifth round of the FA Cup in three consecutive seasons for the first time since doing so in 1978-79, 1979-80 and 1980-81.

But they had to survive brutal conditions against their fourth-tier opponents, who eliminated Manchester United from the EFL Cup earlier this season.

Huge areas of a pitch that survived two pre-match inspections were reduced to mud, with the ball repeatedly becoming bogged down, and Edwards said his team had to revert to childhood tactics.

"It was all set up for a cup upset. Tactics were out of the window, it was a throwback," Edwards said after full-time.

"It was an eye-opener for a lot of them when we arrived... the wind was sideways, and there were puddles on the pitch. It was an aggressive game of headers and volleys!

"It was an interesting game in really difficult conditions, really challenging conditions, obviously for both teams.

"It was a different type of game, a bit of a throwback and one that really we could only win by being professional and doing it right.

"It was an interesting day for some of our Brazilians that they won't forget!"

Wolves have lost just one of their last five away matches across all competitions (one win, three draws), after losing 10 of their previous 11 on the road (one draw). They are back at Molineux on Wednesday, against Premier League leaders Arsenal.
