Chris Gotterup admitted he has no idea where his recent purple patch has come from after he beat Hideki Matsuyama in a play-off to win the Phoenix Open on Sunday.

Gotterup went into the final round trailing overnight leader Matsuyama by four shots but surged into contention with a seven-under 64 to finish on 16-under.

The American shot five birdies in his last six holes in an impressive round, but the victory had remained in Matsuyama's hands until the 18th, which he bogeyed – his only dropped shot in a round of 68.

And in the play-off, Matsuyama found the water on the first hole at the 18th, while Gotterup's birdie secured him the victory, his second PGA Tour title of the year after winning in Hawaii last month.

"I didn't think this would happen, especially after Friday and Saturday. But here we are," Gotterup said after the win.

And asked where his recent hot streak has come from, he added: "God, I don't know. I really have no idea. I'm just having such a good time playing right now.

"You make me cry every time. My girlfriend is here. She's like, you've won three times without me here, and she got to see it, and I know everyone at home is watching. Just so awesome."

World number one Scottie Scheffler finished tied for third, one of five players on 15-under, having recovered brilliantly from a disappointing first round that had put him on the brink of missing the cut.

His final-round 64 saw him finish level with Michael Thorbjornsen, Nicolai Hojgaard, Akshay Bhatia and Kim Si Woo, and Scheffler was proud of how he reacted to his poor start.

"I put myself in a tough position after the first round, but three really solid days," Scheffler said.

"It was another really good round. Overall, proud of the fight this week and did some good stuff.

"I played pretty well. Only one round where I didn't have my best stuff. If I get in the house the first day a couple under par, it's a little different story.

"Overall, proud of the way I fought the last three days to give myself a chance."
