Oliver Glasner was proud of Crystal Palace for fighting through the fatigue to take Arsenal to penalties in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, even if they eventually came up short.

Marc Guehi struck five minutes into second-half stoppage time to force spot-kicks at the Emirates Stadium, cancelling out Maxence Lacroix's own goal in a 1-1 draw.

Palace came under plenty of pressure in regulation time, with their replacement goalkeeper Walter Benitez making seven saves while Kepa Arrizabalaga did not have to make one.

Arsenal racked up 25 shots and 2.76 expected goals, compared to Palace's eight attempts and 0.81 xG. The Gunners fired off 12 of their shots in the first half, when Palace only had two.

But Glasner was pleased with the improvement his team showed after the interval, particularly given this was their third game in the space of six days.

Asked if he was proud of his team's display, Glasner told Sky Sports: "Second half, yes.

"We had a really great goalkeeper, who kept us in the game, but in the second half I saw a different team.

"Coming back here was really great. I don't know if I've seen a shoot-out where all the penalties were taken so well.

"We have to build on the second-half performance.

"Everyone is telling us we have fatigue but if you can switch and play like we did in the second half at the Emirates, it's very positive.

"We were braver and much more aggressive. We played more in their half. It was much better than the first half, when we were too passive. It is not easy to play here."

Arsenal will now face Chelsea in a two-legged semi-final tie, with a trip to Wembley – to face Newcastle United or Manchester City – up for grabs.

Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports he was relieved to come through a difficult test against a Palace team that have lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield trophies in the last year.

"We're very happy to be in the semi-final," he said. "We played against a team where it is very hard to generate chances. We generated a lot and should have had more goals.

"When you don't close the game out, this can always happen, but the players were so composed with the penalties.

"In the second half, they were more aggressive but overall, it's another victory, and I'm very happy."
